Inside the Build: How Suzhou Oiltech Electrostatic Oil Applicators Hold Film Weight on Coil Strip

Film weight is the specification nobody writes on the purchase order, and the one every buyer measures six months later. A strip line can run clean for a month and still lose money on the oil applicator — too much oil burned as waste, too little oil and the coil rusts in the warehouse or scratches on the shear. Suzhou Oiltech Electrostatic Technology Co., Ltd. has spent more than twenty years building equipment for exactly that problem, and this article walks through the machine families, the control philosophy behind them, and what a buyer should look for before signing.

What Electrostatic Oil Application Actually Does

Conventional roll coaters and spray bars deposit oil the way a paintbrush deposits paint — contact, gravity, and a lot of guesswork at the edges. Electrostatic application works differently. The lubricant is atomized and ionized, and an independently controllable high-voltage field drives those charged particles onto the grounded metal strip. The oil wraps the surface instead of sitting on top of it, and because the field is the delivery mechanism, film weight becomes an electrical parameter you can dial rather than a mechanical clearance you have to shim.

That single architectural choice produces three commercial consequences for a plant: lower consumption at any given target film weight, uniform coverage across the strip width including edges, and a repeatable number that quality can audit shift by shift.

Six Machine Families, One Coating Logic

Oiltech organizes its catalogue by strip travel direction and by film weight, because those two variables decide almost everything else.

LSA series vertical electrostatic oil applicator. The precision end of the range. Two standard configurations cover 2–12.5 mg/m² for finish coating of tinplate, chrome-plated sheet and aluminum strip, and 20–100 mg/m² for tinplate base material, tinplate recoiling and tin pretreatment lines. A self-developed core control algorithm allows independent, precise adjustment of coating weight, and a proprietary ionization system paired with constant-tension control cuts maintenance workload and unplanned downtime. A combined-unit design supports both weight ranges on a single machine, so a plant running multiple grades does not need multiple applicators.

WSA and WAX series horizontal electrostatic oil applicators. These cover 100–300 mg/m² for canstock tinplate base material and aluminum strip, and 100–3500 mg/m² for temper rolling, recoiling and hot-dip galvanizing lines. The WSA is the high-end horizontal model: flexible choice of in-house or imported high-voltage power supply, functional redundancy, Siemens S7-1500 control, real-time independent operation monitoring. The WAX is built for mainstream high-end international lines, uses the same high-voltage power supply model as international top-tier electrostatic applicators so spares are interchangeable, and carries active-standby redundancy — one system operational, one on backup. It supports dry-oil coating and optional adjustable-width blade beam, edge-tracking, outlet oil-mist purification and hot-air heating.

HEOD series horizontal electrostatic oil applicator. The cost-effective route to the same 100–300 mg/m² and 100–3500 mg/m² ranges, with a compact structure for easy servicing, imported core components, top-tier domestic majors, and customization to site requirements.

HPOD series oil applicator. Not electrostatic at all — a high-pressure air spraying machine. An oil supply pump feeds the spray system separately while instrument-grade compressed air atomizes lubricant at the nozzle; inertia carries the mist onto the moving strip. It is explosion-proof for flammable coatings, handles water-based conductive coating, runs Siemens S7-1200 control, and includes purification to prevent overflow pollution. When a line needs water-based chemistry, this is the machine in the catalogue.

BC series bar stock oil applicator. Purpose-engineered for bar stock rather than coil, with an ultra-low application rate to save lubricant and an independently controllable high-voltage supply under S7-1200 control.

What the Workshop Photographs Show

The build photographs released with this equipment show floor-mounted units in a teal-painted enclosure, with a hinged front door carrying two rectangular inspection windows so an operator can watch the strip pass and the electrode area without opening the cabinet. Along the side sits the oil circulation package: a motor-driven pump on a fabricated bracket, a pressure gauge, a filter-regulator with yellow bowl, and stainless and yellow-painted piping running to the process chamber. Cable runs are protected in black corrugated conduit, warning and identification labels sit at eye height on the door, and vent louvres on the upper panel handle cabinet heat. Each unit stands on a welded steel base with levelling feet — the kind of frame that gets bolted to a foundation, not balanced on a pallet.

Adjacent equipment in the same bay includes an air dryer with visible pressure gauges and flexible hosing, which tells you how these machines are commissioned: pneumatics and oil supply are treated as part of the installation, not an afterthought.

Behind the Machines: Manufacturing Depth

The company operates from Suzhou in the Yangtze River Delta on 15 mu of owned land with 10,000 m² of standard production floor. Internally it runs a sheet-metal branch plant plus three dedicated workshops — complete oil applicator assembly, oil-mist purification equipment, and intelligent control display panels. Thirty-plus sets of production equipment include fully automatic five-axis gantry machining centers, fiber laser cutters and CNC press brakes; more than sixty sets of inspection instruments include spectrometers, color-difference meters and oil-film thickness gauges, applied across incoming material, in-process and finished goods.

Eighty-plus staff work across nine standardized departments. Eleven full-time mechanical, electrical and electronic engineers handle design iteration, on-site line survey, process customization and commissioning. Five service engineers cover domestic and overseas installation, breakdown response and scheduled inspection. Five inspectors run incoming, production and pre-shipment quality control. The management system holds ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certification, applied through production, inspection, delivery and after-sales.

Reference Base and Compatibility

Domestic references include the full Baowu Group — WISCO (a 2009 tinplate line and a 2011 recoiling line), Sanmenxia Baowu Aluminum and Xinjiang Bayi Steel — plus Shougang, Ansteel, Benxi Steel, Lianyuan Steel, Guangzhou Steel, Jiuquan Steel, Southwest Aluminum, Nan Nan Aluminum and VAMA. Private producers include Shagang, Hebei Jingye, Jianlong, Taihang Steel and Kema. Overseas installations include TATA in India, NLMK and Severstal in Russia, Tosyali Toyo and TATMETAL in Turkey, and ISL in Pakistan. The equipment is supplied both direct to owners and through EPC contractors, and is built to integrate with SMS, Tenova, Danieli and Clecim lines.

How to Read the Range Before You Inquire

If your target film weight is below 20 mg/m², you are in vertical territory and the LSA is the conversation. If you are protecting cold-rolled, galvanized or recoiled coil at 100–3500 mg/m², the WSA, WAX and HEOD are the horizontal options — pick WSA for the highest functional redundancy and monitoring, WAX for spares-interchangeability with existing top-tier equipment, HEOD for budget against a wide application scope. If your coating is water-based or flammable, the HPOD spray machine is the correct fit, with explosion-proof construction and mist purification included.

Talk to the Engineers, Not a Catalogue

Film weight targets, line speed, strip width, oil viscosity and existing automation all change the specification. Oiltech builds to site survey and accepts customization. Send your line parameters and get a machine configuration back — no generic datasheet required.
